Sleep is absolutely integral to our health and well being. We spend 1/3rd of our life or more sleeping, so really, optimizing our sleep should be something we all strive to do. That means practicing proper sleep hygiene, developing a regular sleep schedule, and ensuring you have a comfortable mattress. But how often should you replace your mattress? The answer depends on a number of factors – let’s dive in!
How Often Should You Replace Your Mattress?
The conventional wisdom throws out a mattress lifespan of 5-10 years, but it’s not always that simple. When determining how often to replace a mattress, there are several questions you should be asking yourself, such as:
- Are you (and your partner, if relevant) sleeping well?
- Does the bed still feel comfortable?
- Was it a high quality bed to begin with?
- Did you take good care of it by flipping it, cleaning it, etc?
- Do you notice any soft spots, saggy areas, odors, unsightly stains, etc?
Once you’ve considered these questions, then you can ask yourself how often should you get a new mattress. The bottom line is if you’re not sleeping well with your current mattress, you need a new one! It could be that the mattress is still in decent shape, but it just wasn’t the right mattress for you to begin with. Or, it could be that the mattress was great when new, but it’s worn out over the last few years of nightly use.
How Do You Know When it’s Time?
Since there’s no cut-and-dry rule, no printed “expiration date”, it’s definitely a judgement call on how often to replace your bed. That said, there are definitely some signs that the time has come – some obvious, some more subtle.
If you are not sleeping well, you likely need a new mattress. Remember to consider both your sleep quality and the sleep quality of anyone sharing the bed with you. Also, try to compare how you’re sleeping now with how you slept when the mattress was new.
If you are waking up sore or stiff, you likely need a new mattress. Sure, soreness can be caused by a variety of factors, but more often than not, a poor mattress is to blame for stiffness in the morning.
If you sleep better while away, you likely need a new mattress. If your last hotel stay or family visit resulted in more restful sleep than you get at home, chances are it’s time to upgrade.
If it’s been more than 10 years, you likely need a new mattress. Mattresses take quite a beating over the years, and even with proper care, few last more than 10 years or so. This can especially be the case if you have a very soft mattress as they may wear out faster than a firm bed.
If it’s been more than 5 years, you should start paying more attention to your sleep quality and mattress comfort. If you determine that the mattress is still fine, try to check back in every 6-12 months. When they start to wear out, mattress comfort can degrade quickly.
